THE ARTIST BEHIND BIG BLUE

Born in Massachusetts in 1965 Roland St. John has always had a passion for nature since childhood. Now an experienced diver and underwater videographer for over 25 years he has filmed some of the most spectacular marine life around the world.

Using the footage for reference while sculpting enables him to create incredibly detailed and life-like work.

The footage also enables Roland to capture the animals in motion, which helps him to sculpt realistic as well as his contemporary works of art. His passion for our Oceans has led him to use his art to help create awareness and become involved in protecting threatened species around the world.

Big Blue - Aquatic Gifts started in 1997 and now offers over 100 different styles including Jewelry, Bronze Sculptures, and Home Decor, all Made In the USA.

Roland is a supporter of The Sea Shepherds Conservation Society creating and donating art to help Canadian seals, dolphins, whales, sharks, turtles, and other marine life. He is also on the Board of directors for SOLO
(Save Our Leatherbacks Operation) Founded by Larry McKenna, to help save the critically endangered Pacific Leatherback sea turtles.

Roland has been working with Shark Angels Founder Julie Andersen and Director of Operations Jamie Pollack and their mission to educate worldwide and ban the sale and distribution of shark fin products.

In 2009 Roland St. John was inducted into the Ocean Artist Society Founded by Wyland, Guy Harvey, and Bob Talbot. Uniting Artists to inspire people around the world to help preserve our natural world.

THE HUMBLE BEGINNINGS OF SHARK EYES

 

Shark Eyes begun a few years back, when the founder Shanan Worrall and his dive buddy Joe Knight were trying to keep themselves safe in the water, as they went about their days work shell diving.

The thought was, “we are utilising all these deterrents but we are still at risk, what else can we do to protect ourselves and our space from an inquisitive shark?”

They knew the naked eye worked at changing a sharks behaviour, (line of sight) they had both stared down sharks before and watched them retreat. But what if the shark saw them before they saw the shark? What if the shark came from behind or the bottom, as they most likely would in an attack?

The theory of mimicry came to mind, they had seen fish use mimicry (large false eyes on their backs) to protect themselves from predators, as well as other various land animals.

And so, Shark Eyes was born in the garage that day as they decided to mimic what nature was doing and painted large silicone eyes on to the back of their wetsuits and water crafts.

They both still use Shark Eyes personally, along with other personal deterrents to this day.

What led to commercialisation of Shark Eyes was Shanan's realisation that this non-invasive, accessible and inexpensive visual shark deterrent could very well save not only his life and the lives of his colleagues and mates, but minimise the risk of attack for so many water users without harming sharks - it is for everyone who enjoys the ocean regardless of ones political views.

Since that day, there has been an increase in shark sightings, encounters, attacks and fatalities across Australia.
