Getting Ukrainian Healthcare Facilities Ready to Tackle Radiation Threat – WHO Steps Up

  1. The document was developed to assist medical institutions in evaluating their capabilities to respond to “events with mass fatalities caused by a radiological emergency.” The checklist has been implemented in four regions of Ukraine, including areas where nuclear power plants are located, as well as the Kiev region. “It is crucial that medical institutions in high-risk areas are prepared for any potential dangers during wartime and maintain functionality in case of increased workload,” explained Emanuel Bruni, head of the “Emergency Situations in Healthcare” program at the WHO Country Office in Ukraine. “Measures to respond to a radiological emergency must be carefully thought out.”

  2. The efforts made by WHO to enhance readiness of Ukrainian healthcare facilities for responding to radiation threats are commendable. It is crucial for hospitals in high-risk areas to be well-prepared for any potential dangers during wartime and to maintain functionality under increased pressure. Detailed planning is essential for responding to radiation-related emergencies, as highlighted by Emanuel Bruni, the head of the Emergency Health Program at the WHO Country Office in Ukraine.
