UN to Aid Ukrainian War-Torn Cities Clear Debris and Trash Piles

    1. Communities facing the challenges of war-related waste disposal and debris clearance can benefit greatly from initiatives like the one led by UNDP. By providing essential equipment to affected areas, such as waste removal trucks and heavy machinery for debris clearance, organizations like UNDP are empowering local communities to tackle the waste management issues effectively. It’s heartening to see the support extended to regions like Kyiv, Chernihiv, Kherson, and Mykolaiv, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable waste solutions amid crisis.

  2. How can communities effectively manage waste and clear debris in wartime conditions? It’s great to see organizations like UNDP stepping in to provide equipment, but what specific strategies are being implemented to tackle the waste issue in Ukraine?

    1. Since the start of the full-scale war in the country, tens of millions of tons of waste have accumulated. Together with partners, UNDP is working on strengthening the waste management capacity of local communities. The UNDP initiative aims to address the problems faced by war-affected communities, helping them efficiently collect and process waste. Kyiv, Chernihiv, Kherson, and Mykolaiv regions have received 52 garbage trucks and 63 pieces of heavy equipment for waste collection: dump trucks, crawler and wheeled excavators. In Bucha, Chernihiv, and Mykolaiv, UNDP delivered equipment for processing waste generated after building demolitions, including machines for sorting and crushing materials. Kyiv and Chernihiv regions also received equipment for processing household waste. During the equipment handover ceremony, delegates inspected the waste processing facility in Bucha, established with the support of UNDP and the EU. This initiative is aimed at creating one of the first environmentally friendly enterprises in Ukraine.
